Zagori is a
destination for all seasons. Is 28 km away from
Ioannina, capital of Epirus. The
region of Zagori is divided in three subareas: The
central Zagori area, the western Zagori area and
the eastern Zagori area. For the people who love
the nature (and the activities
as well), Zagori is a real 'treasure'.
The flora and
the fauna are rich and rare, with
many protected species. The region
has many deep valleys, forests and gorges. Due to
the wild formation of the ground and the many stones
the residents constructed stone-made footpaths
and bridges in order to connect
the villages. Many of these sights today are 'cultural
monuments' and are protected. Many tourists (from
all over the world) visit Zagori every year, to
experience the beauty of the area.
The villages have kept their
traditional picture without to
be touched by the time. Monodendri is 39 km away
from Ioannina and is a very popular village
to the visitors. The local benefactors of the village
helped Monodendri to obtain during 17th and 18th
centuries schools, stone built manor-houses and
churches. The name of the village is from a big
fir that existed until 1840. Monodendri was formed
after the union of three small settlements: Agios
Giorgios, Ano Mahalas and Vitsa.
The village is built in an altitude
of 1060 meters above the sea level and
is a destination for hundreds visitors, because
of the famous gorge of Vikos. This
gorge is registered in the Guinness book of records,
for its depth.

Greek and foreign
tourists visit the famous gorge. In the
gorge there are some organized trekking paths with
signs to other villages. The route is 5 hours and
the visitors can see the unique flora and fauna
as well as rare animal species.
